Soul Series

Soul Edge / Soul Blade
(ソル エッジ, Soru Ejji) is the first installment in the Soul series of fighting games developed and published by Namco. Soul Edge is the name of the demonic sword around which the story revolves.

According to a timeline released by Namco in its Soul Archive site, Soul Edge's events take place in 1584.
Soul Edge's story tells the tale of warriors searching for the ultimate sword, "Soul Edge". It has been given many names throughout the story, such as "The Sword of Salvation", "The Sword of Heroes",
and "The Ultimate Sword" among others. Many strong warriors searched for years, but very few actually found it. The sword, now in the form of a twin pair of long swords, appeared mysteriously in an auction.
They were taken by the dreaded Captain Cervantes. Nothing was known of his fate thereafter...
Now, nine warriors from around the world search for the sword for different reasons. Some for power, others for revenge; some believing it's a benevolent sword, searching for its support; while others knowing of its evil nature,
seeking its destruction. Nothing is known for certain about the sword, except for one thing: it brings misfortune to those seeking it.


Soul Edge introduced many characters still familiar to players today, especially the series' main character—who serves as both a protagonist and an antagonist throughout the series' history—Siegfried;
as well as its token samurai and ninja, Mitsurugi and Taki, respectively. The series is also well known for its infamous character Voldo. There are a total of fifteen selectable characters: eight in the original arcade
release,and ten in the fixed arcade and home versions. Additionally the character Seong Han-myeong, made his one and only appearance as a playable character in Soul Blade as a secret character. Soul Edge is
the final character unlcoked as well as the games boss.

Added features

* The original ten selectable characters received a new PlayStation-specific costume, chosen from various works sent by fans, giving each one a total of three different costumes, plus two color variations for the 1P and 2P costumes.
* The inclusion, besides the standard "Arcade" mode, of: "VS" mode, "Survival", "Team Battle", "Time Attack" and "Training" modes.
* A new RPG-styled mode called "Edge Master Mode", which works as a sort of "Story Mode" for the ten initial characters. The mode presents the selected character's story as a book, while the player moves in a
map to various locations and fights in battles, sometimes with handicap rules. Generally, each "Chapter" of the book rewards the player with a weapon.
* Individual endings done using the game's renderer, rather than still images (as in its sequels, Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur II) or CGI. Each of the ten normally selectable characters have two endings, usually one
ending which ends well and another tragic ending. These endings are accessible by pressing a special button/button sequence during certain times, indicated by black bars moving away, whilst others involve a short
minigame, such as Mitsurugi avoiding gunshots. This type of ending was finally brought back in Soulcalibur III.
* The inclusion of seven extra weapons per character, which have different designs and statistics, composed of Power (inflicts more damage), Defense (receives less damage), Strength (damage dealt to enemy's
weapon gauge), Durability (resistance of player's weapon gauge) and Weight (changes character's speed). Some weapons also have a special ability, like the ability to damage through defense or restore the player's health.
* The inclusion of three different in-game soundtracks to choose from: the Arcade Soundtrack, a studio-recorded version of the arcade soundtrack called Arrange Soundtrack and the Khan Super Session, made expressly for the home version.

The PAL version of Soul Blade featured some edits. Clothes were added to Sophitia in the opening cutscene where she would have been nude, and Li Long's nunchuk was changed to a three-section staff.

(ソウルキャリバ, SoruKyariba) is a fighting game developed and produced by Namco. It is the second game in the Soul series.
Originally released in the arcades running on the Namco System 12 hardware, Soulcalibur was ported to the Dreamcast with improved graphics and new features. Soulcalibur was later released on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008.

The Dreamcast port is often cited as the greatest fighting game of all time, and even one of the greatest games across all genres; it is ranked as one of the best games of all time by review aggregator site GameRankings.

The mystical sword of the legends, the "Soul Edge", ended up in the hands of the dread pirate Cervantes of Spain. For the next 25 years he stayed dormant on the remnants of a Spanish port town,
taking the souls of those who reached him during their search of the sword. His reign of terror was soon to start, but through the joined efforts of a divine warrior (Sophitia) and an underground ninja (Taki)
stopped him, breaking one of the twin Soul Edge blades in the process. As it was about to tear itself apart, a young knight (Siegfried) approached the port town. The moment he took the hilt of the cursed blade,
Soul Edge released a bright column of light into the sky. This was known as the "Evil Seed", bound to bring calamity and death across its path.

Three years after those events, Soul Edge uses Siegfried as its host, and now Siegfried is Nightmare, a knight wearing azure armor. Europe plunges into a vortex of slaughters as he and his followers claim souls
to strengthen the blade in its weakened state. Unknown to them, a group of young warriors met on their journey to stop Soul Edge, and with them three sacred weapons join once again.

Soulcalibur was originally planned to be a dramatic overhaul, featuring only a few select characters to be carried over from its predecessor, Soul Edge. While the initial plan did not exactly follow through—
as nine of the eleven characters from the original roster had carried over by the time the game was ported to the Dreamcast--the game still did manage to nearly double the size of the roster from the previous title.
Most of these characters were readily available from the second the player opens the package.

But although the game added ten new characters, several of them were simply updated versions of previously existing styles; for example Kilik's moveset was largely taken from
Seung Mi Na, and Xianghua's was largely based on Hwang, whereas Maxi was a greatly updated version of what Soul Edge's Li Long would have been if he had returned. Of three of the main antagonists,
Nightmare's moveset was largely taken from Siegfried, Astaroth's from Rock; and Lizardman was based primarily on Soul Edge's featured heroine, Sophitia. In the Korean version of the game,
Mitsurugi was replaced by a Caucasian swordsman named Arthur because the image of the samurai was not very popular with the Korean people[citation needed]. Added to that is the fact that both
Edge Master and Inferno switch their styles to match randomly-chosen existing characters' movelists with each individual round of fighting. In fact, Soulcalibur only added two truly original playing styles,
shown in Ivy and Yoshimitsu; and even Yoshimitsu had some moves borrowed from established character Mitsurugi as well as the character of the same name in the Tekken series. Additionally, Taki has
experienced a change of her own now that she wields dual wakizashi instead of one. Consequently, Namco has been working hard since Soulcalibur to gradually separate the roster's styles until the series
features completely original styles for each of its characters.

After developing Soul Edge, Namco decided to wait instead of immediately pursuing a sequel, and evaluate what had made the game successful. Deciding to take the sequel in a different direction,
producer Hiroaki Yotoriyama changed the name of the series to reflect the decision. Trial and error was done to experiment with different ideas, resulting in the creation of the game's 8-way-run system,
inspired by a prototype game shown at Namco featuring a character able to run openly in a field. Upon application, the development team were surprised at how well it meshed with their fighting system, and
decided to build around it. During development they worked closely with Namco's Tekken development team, sharing ideas and research. Yotoriyama felt that due to the partnership, they were able to develop
"the greatest weapon-based fighting action game in the world".

Soulcalibur II
(ソウルキャリバII, Sorukyariba Tsu) is a fighting game developed and published by Namco and the third installment in the Soul series. Soul Calibur is the name of the holy sword, created to battle the evil sword Soul Edge, which the games' story-lines revolve around. The home version of the game features Heihachi Mishima from Tekken, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Spawn from the comic book series by Todd McFarlane, and Necrid, a new character created by Todd McFarlane. Each of the first three characters is exclusive to one of the three consoles the game was ported to (the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox, respectively), while Necrid is present in all three home versions.

The game is set 4 years after the end of Soulcalibur, which based on calculations from a timeline released on the Soul Archive website, puts the game's story in the year 1591.
The wave of slaughters that terrorized Europe reached a sudden end. The knight in azure armor, Nightmare, and his followers were successful in collecting enough souls and
were about to start the restoring ceremony on the ruins of the once-proud Ostreinsburg Castle. But just as the ceremony was to start, three young warriors assaulted the castle.
After an intense battle Nightmare fell, but then the evil soul inside Soul Edge sent the young warriors into a vortex of hellfire and stood to confront them. As a result of Soul Edge's evil aura,
Krita-Yuga revealed its true form: that of the Holy Sword, Soul Calibur.
The intense battle ended with the victory of the holy sword, but at the collapse of the vortex of Inferno, both swords along with the azure Nightmare were sucked in a void and expelled
in another place. Siegfried, recognizing his sins, set out on a journey of atonement. Still the blade held a strong bond, and every night it took control of the body and took souls of those nearby.
The efforts made by the young knight were fruitless, and four years later the Azure Knight Nightmare returned.
Around those times various warriors came into contact of the blade's remaining fragments, revealing Soul Edge's ultimate survival after its defeat. Driven either to possess or destroy it, they join a new journey,
while Nightmare begins his rampage, seeking souls to restore Soul Edge once again.

Four new characters were introduced in Soulcalibur II: Cassandra, Raphael, Talim, and Yun-seong. However, while Cassandra and Yun-seong's fighting styles are derived from established characters
Sophitia and Hwang Seong-gyeong, Raphael and Talim's fighting styles are entirely unique. Charade, like his predecessors Edge Master and Inferno, switches his style to match existing characters' movelists
with each individual round of fighting. Each of the home versions also included Necrid, who was not included in the arcade version of Soulcalibur II. Necrid, like Spawn, was personally designed by comic book artist Todd McFarlane.

Rounding out the characters were returning fighters Seung Mina and Sophitia from both Soul Edge and Soulcalibur. Lizardman returns, but is only playable in VS Mode and certain portions of Weapon Master.
From the Soulcalibur character roster, the ones that did not return for Soulcalibur II as characters themselves were Hwang Seong-gyeong, Nathaniel "Rock" Adams, and Edge Master. Inferno is in the game, only this time,
he is not a playable character. Nightmare's 3rd costume is Siegfried (though he is still referred to as Nightmare), while Assassin and Berserker play extremely similar to Hwang and Rock. Hwang, Siegfried, and Rock, however,
would all return as fully playable characters in the following game.

Added features

Compared to Soulcalibur, Soulcalibur II boasts improved graphics and introduces new characters, stages, and music.

Key game engine improvements include:

* More powerful "step" and "avoid" systems, which made evading vertical attacks noticeably easier.
* Arena walls, rather than ring-out ability on all sides, and wall-specific moves.
* A three-step Soul Charge system.
* A clash system, one that is used when two attacks would hit each other resulting in a white flash
* Guard break attacks, which put a blocking player into a post guard-impact state
* Just frame moves, which awarded additional hits to players who could time their command inputs well.
* A revised Guard Impact system that removed height-based Impact moves and instead used a more unified system (high and mid attacks are countered using Repels, mid and low attacks are countered using Parries).


Soulcalibur III
(ソウルキャリバIII, SoruKyariba Suri) is a fighting game produced by Namco and is the sequel to Soulcalibur II and is the fourth overall installment in the Soul series of fighting games.
It was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2, unlike its predecessor Soulcalibur II, which was also released for both GameCube and Xbox, with a single unique character featuring in each version.

This game takes place shortly after Soulcalibur II, meaning that the year is still 1591. The amount of time is not specified, but taking into account the various characters' profiles, a minimum of
four months has already passed (one month Xianghua needed to carry Kilik back to his master's hermit, three months that took Kilik to surpass his master's training.)
The wicked Soul Edge survived its fated encounter with the wielder of Soulcalibur, Xianghua, and restored its control over the body of Siegfried Schtauffen, turning him back into the Azure Knight Nightmare.
Four years later, Nightmare was about to restore Soul Edge, when suddenly a man named Raphael who wielded a thin rapier appeared, intending on taking Soul Edge. Nightmare defeated the attacker,
but was distracted by Siegfried's latent will trying to restore his body. Using the distraction, Raphael pierced Soul Edge's eye, giving Siegfried the edge he needed to break free from Soul Edge's control once again.
After waking up, Siegfried found the holy sword, free from its entrapment within the wicked sword, and out of instinct used it to pierce Soul Edge. The result led to both swords sealed together in a fateful embrace,
an Embrace of Souls. Siegfried took both weapons and started a quest to find a definitive way of sealing Soul Edge, but memories of his slaughters, plus the attacks of those resentful of the Azure Knight, drove his
mind towards insanity. Unbeknownst to him, the evil soul of the blade escaped and obtained a temporary shell, starting a new killing spree to strengthen himself while seeking its body, Soul Edge.
What neither of the two warriors knows is that a man behind the scenes is controlling their steps, searching to end an everlasting curse. And that many other warriors ventured in search of the blade as well.

Nearly all characters who have been featured in a Soul series title in the past return, except for Inferno, Necrid, Seong Han-myeong, Edge Master, and the console-exclusive guest characters Heihachi, Link, and Spawn.
Soulcalibur II's mimic character Charade does return in a non-playable form, as do the generic Lizardmen. Other unlockable characters include personnel in the Chronicles of the Sword quest, opponents from the Tales of Souls mode,
and the weapon, armor, and item shop owners.
Strife Astlar Grandall from Soulcalibur III is ranked first on Game Informer Magazine’s list of The Top Ten Worst Hairstyles with the basis of: "A unaimous shoo-in for the most dubious position on our list, Stife isn't a happy looking lad.
For good reason - appointed ruler of his father's empire at age 10, Strife apparently never thought to update his pageboy hairstyle. Perhaps he was too busy slaughtering family members and losing his grip on reality.
The hair alone is reason enough for the permanent scowl." Dante from the Devil May Cry series was also expected to make the Soul Calibur 3 roster as a guest character but failed to make the roster.

Chronicles of the Sword

Chronicles of the Sword is a one-player mode. The objective is to make a character using the custom character creation system and play it through a story. It begins with the player starting out as a rookie commander for the Grandall Empire.
There are 20 Chronicles, or levels, each one getting harder than the last. The basis is the player's troops are minimized and they move like board game pieces. The player must fight the enemies and take their strongholds scattered through the level.
When two enemies on the map are fighting, the player could have them slash each other on their own or select "Battle" and duke it out Soulcalibur style. Winning the chronicles results in a certain amount of gold depending on how well the player did.
As the characters fight, they gain levels, and become stronger. Sometimes the standard characters may be found in strongholds or standing and they are always level 60 (Olcadan and Abyss, however, do not appear). As the story progresses the
player also gain some pre-made characters that can be controlled.

The plot places the player's character in the role of a young cadet of the Grandall Empire, who is chosen to lead the war against its neighboring countries, Halteese and Dalkia. As the player proceeds in their campaign,
taking territories and forcing enemy troops back, they start to realize the true meaning of war and the reason they fight, eventually discovering the true enemies of their country.

Throughout the chronicles, the player gains many rewards. Most character's ultimate weapons (the weapons with four effects) are obtained throughout the story. The player can also unlock more armor, faces, disciplines, etc.
for custom characters. Also, if the player starts Chronicles of the Sword after certain weapon disciplines have been unlocked, the character may use those during battle.

"Soulcalibur III: Arcade Edition is a re-tuned, re-vamped, and, most importantly, fixed version of Soulcalibur III. Naturally, all glitches found in the console version have been fixed. In addition to that,
we've re-tuned the overall balance of many moves and re-vamped Amy, Hwang and Li Long as official characters. All three have been revised into more distinctive move sets and help to expand the already expansive Soulcalibur III line-up. ”

Soulcalibur III is part of the Universal Fighting System Collectible Card Game, created by Sabertooth Games and now published by Fantasy Flight Games.
It was one of the official founding franchises of the card game,next to Street Fighter, when the game was released April 2006. UFS has seen five expansions based on Soulcalibur III's characters and history.

Soulcalibur Legends
(ソウルキャリバーレジェンズ, SoruKyariba Rejenzu) is an action-adventure game for the Wii console. It is a spin-off of Namco Bandai's successful Soul fighting game series.
It was released on November 20, 2007 in North America and was released in Japan on December 13, 2007. The game was eventually released in Europe and the UK on August 28th 2008.
The game features competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes in addition to the single player story mode.

The story of Soulcalibur Legends takes place between Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, and is based around Siegfried Schtauffen's transformation into Nightmare.
The game begins as Siegfried finds Soul Edge on a ship. He battles Cervantes on the deck of the ship.
Later, Siegfried is tasked by the Masked Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire to find the remaining pieces of Soul Edge in order to use it to win the war against Barbaros of the Ottoman Empire.

The game features seven playable characters. Series staples Nightmare and Cervantes make an appearance in the game as non-playable bosses. Assassin, Berserker and Lizardmen from Soulcalibur II also appear in the game as generic enemies.

Sultan Barbaros
Barbaros is seen as the main villain in Soulcalibur Legends. He was once the leader of a band of thieves when his band discovered Soulcalibur in the home of a general.
Barbara, part of the same gang stated that Barbaros changed personality-wise when he claimed Soulcalibur. The spirit sword bestowed Barbaros with immense power, causing him to
grow into a giant and allowed him to conquer the Ottoman Empire where he crowned himself sultan. He fought against the Holy Roman Empire, leading an army of Evils (monsters) to lay siege to the city of Vienna.
The Masked Emperor enlisted the help of Siegfried to regain the shards of Soul Edge and combat Barbaros since Soul Edge was the only weapon that could stand up to Barbaros and Soulcalibur.
After recovering all the shards Siegfried battled Barbaros and defeated him, causing Soulcalibur to emerge from his forehead. Barbaros was the only character shown to use Soulcalibur for evil purposes.

After the Evil Seed event, Fafnir the dragon appears as a boss character in Soulcalibur Legends. According to Paracelcus
Fafnir was the first dragon and that all the myths about dragons all over the world were inspired by him. He was slain by the hero Sigmund (whom Siegfried is named after)
who slew the dragon using his sword Requiem. According to the legend, Sigmund asked his friend to reforge his broken sword, Gram, who gave his life for the sword.
In his grief, Sigmund renamed the sword Requiem in honor of his friend and after defeating Fafnir he placed Requiem in an altar in the ancient Cathedral where Fafnir roosted.
In the 16th Century Fafnir is one of the Guardians that holds a shard of Soul Edge. The heroes need to enlist the aid of a scientist named Leonardo who claimed to have invented a
weapon that could kill a dragon, which were needed because Fafnir could not be combatted while in the air by conventional means. With these weapons Siegfried and Ivy are able to slay Fafnir and recover the shard.
Later on Fafnir and the other guardians are revived by Soulcalibur but are slain once again by Siegfried.

Ilona Farkas
Iska Farkas' sister who got taken by Barbaros. Iska is always mumbling about Ilona and how he regrets not saving her. When Barbaros attacked Hungary,
Iska fled but forgot Ilona. The Masked Emperor was made to look like her, revealed at the end of Soulcalibur Legends. Before his death, Iska starts to say something to her,
but it is cut off. Their graves are shown at the credits, showing that Ilona did die or at least had a headstone dedicated to her.

Iska Farkas
He is one of the key characters in the series' spin-off, Soulcalibur Legends. He is a refugee and Hungarian prince who serves as a court jester for a Masked Emperor.
Iska has heterochromia with one blue eye and one red eye. His belts also correspond to this trait.
He was born in Buda who lived with his sister Ilona until the usurper sultan, Barbaros, attacked the city and destroyed it, though his sister allowed him to escape with his
life by sacrificing herself. Iska then went around the world looking for shelter, but all those that took him in eventually betrayed and used him, and then he studied under
the famous alchemist Paracelsus who taught him much at Basel, until Iska disappeared, stealing Paracelsus's notes on the creation of false humans and was said to have made at least one successful artificial human.
He thought up a crazed scheme to take over the world using the swords Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, to gain power for his lost sister. He used Paracelsus's notes to create
a homunculus, made to look in the form of his sister. She managed to become the Masked Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He faked a story of being brought in by the "Masked Emperor" and becomes her court jester.
His scheme comes into effect, as his homunculus has Siegfried and several other companions reluctantly agree to help the Holy Roman Empire against Barbaros of the
Ottoman Empire (who wields Soul Calibur) by strengthening Soul Edge, which Siegfried wields. Iska is very persuasive in keeping his comrades to uphold their agreements
and constantly reminisces about missing his sister and his home, lamenting his weakness, and wishes that he had strength and power which he did not have then to survive the pains of his life.
After Soul Edge regains power and Siegfried kills Barbaros, claiming Soul Calibur, the "Masked Emperor" claims Soul Edge and tries to attack Siegfried and claim Soul Edge for Iska.
However, a new version of the Evil Seed comes from Soul Calibur as the two swords clash, knocking Siegfried far away. Siegfried ends up sealing Soul Edge's power after realizing that
he killed his own father at the peak of the Himalayas, however keeps it. He also gets Requiem here. The group storms Vienna to defeat the Emperor, and after Siegfried does, he plants
Soul Edge into the ground alongside Soul Calibur. Iska then claims them (restoring Soul Edge's power using Soul Calibur), revealing his scheme to Siegfried. He then attempts to kill Siegfried,
but Siegfried instead wins and Iska dies. During the credits there are two graves that say Iska Farkas and Ilona Farkas. Siegfried keeps Soul Edge, eventually succumbing to the Evil Seed and becoming Nightmare.


Soulcalibur IV
(ソウルキャリバーIV, SoruKyariba Fo) is the fourth installment in Namco's Soul series of fighting games, and was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on
July 29, 2008, in North America, on July 31, 2008, in Japan, Europe, and Australia, and on August 1, 2008, in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The game is notable for its inclusion of three characters from the popular Star Wars franchise as playable fighters.

Many characters from the Soul series return for Soulcalibur IV, with newcomers Hilde and Algol added to the roster. The Star Wars characters Darth Vader, Yoda and The Apprentice are playable as guest characters.
Initially, Darth Vader appeared on the PlayStation 3, and Yoda appeared on the Xbox 360; Namco later made both characters downloadable content on the opposite platform for a fee. Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice,
the main protagonist of LucasArts' video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, is playable on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Matt Sloan, Tom Kane and Sam Witwer, the voice actors for Vader, Yoda
and The Apprentice respectively in various Star Wars games and cartoons, reprise their roles in the English translation of SCIV. They are the only voice actors to be credited in the game in the English Voice Actors billing.

Revenant, Frederick Schtauffen and several other minor Soul series characters make an appearance in battle; most can be made in the Character Creation mode. Several bonus characters designed by manga artists -
"Angol Fear", "Ashlotte", "Kamikirimusi", "Scheherazade" and "Shura" - are also playable in the game, and use the fighting styles of returning characters.

Premium Edition
The Premium Edition of Soulcalibur IV includes a 48-page softcover art/comic book illustrated in full color, an XL 100% cotton t-shirt, and a tournament chart that allows "fans the opportunity to document the battle amongst friends.
" This chart is also a poster on the reverse side. It comes in a metal case and was released on the same date as the regular edition. GameSpot also mentioned exclusive access to extra customization content in this version.
The "extra customization content" refers to the automatic unlocking of the most powerful weapons and joke weapons for each character, as well as clothing items to create a schoolboy or schoolgirl character.

Soul Calibur:Broken Destiny
Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny is a fighting game in the Soul series for PlayStation Portable (PSP). It was announced by Namco Bandai on April 28, 2009. It uses many of the features of Soulcalibur IV,
including its character customization mode. One of the goals of the game is "to target beginners and novice players with Soulcalibur IV's content." The game introduces two new characters to the series —
Kratos from the God of War series and Dampierre, a new original character.

PSP Boxart

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny includes 28 characters. All regular characters from Soulcalibur IV return, but the bonus characters and Star Wars guest characters from Soulcalibur IV are absent.
A new, exclusive character named Dampierre is introduced. At the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Namco Bandai revealed that they were to be replaced with a different guest character — Kratos from Sony's God of War series.

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny features an English language and Japanese language mode for both text and speech. Custom characters, however, can only be named using the Roman alphabet naming interface, regardless of the language setting.

In all these games are filled with action and different fighting styles.
