| *UPDATE*
Welcome to ROFLCOPTER and Hayleyzball Japanese Lessons. New lessons will (hopefully)be posted everyday. These lessons will help you to learn the basics to the somewhat advanced language of Japanese.
Heres a bit of information to start off with:
Japanese Writing
Japanese writing is traditionally from top to bottom, from the right hand side of a page to the left. A traditional Japanese book appears 'back to front' to the westerner. This layout is still most common in Japan today. Some books (e.g. the telephone book) are now published in horizontal script, from left to right. Students often write in modern way in there excersice books - but not always. Remember that Japanese people don't use western letters for their own language - only foreigners do that!
Modern way of writing:
Start at こ
こんにちわ。おげんきですか。 はい、おかげさまでげんきです。
Traditional way of writing:
Start here。V で さ は か お こ す ま い 。 げ ん 。 で ’ ん に げ お き ち ん か で は き げ す 。
Translations.
Hello. How are you? Thank you. I'm fine.
Konnichiwa. ogenkidesuka? Hai, okagesamade gekidesu.
--------------------------------
Western writing often gets slanted to the right, or sometimes to the left; Japanese writing is straight up and down and is in a box shape. Please, do not slant your hiragana. Remember that your hiragana, and later katakana nad your kanji, are all the same size. All kana and kanji fit into the same size square. When writing kana (and kanji) remember the golden rule about strokes. The rule is:
1. LEFT TO RIGHT 2. TOP TO BOTTOM 3. CLOCKWISE
Pronunciation
The pronunciation of Japanese kana is very easy. All vowels and consonants are short and all Japanese words seem broken up into syllables. Perhaps the only difficult kana to pronounce are the five vowel sounds. Here are the five English words to help you remember the five hiragana vowel sounds:
あ=A as in car, or (a)rtist い=I as in litre, or t(ea)pot う=U as in super, or h(oo)p え=E as in step, or p(e)lican お=O as in sock, or (o)strich
--------------------------------
Ohk now thats over. Todays lesson is on the vowels: A,E,I,O and U and will be taken by ROFLCOPTER
あ artist An important kana that should reinforce the stroke order of left to right, top to bottom and clockwise.
い teapot The second stroke on the right is clearly shorter than the first stroke.
う hoop Make sure that the first stroke is ABOVE the second one - don't let it fall off.
え pelican Make sure that the first stroke is ABOVE the second one - don't let it fall off.
お ostrich this kana is often confused with the あ kana. The curl on the right is bigger than the left side.
-------------------------------- Thank you for participating in our first lesson. The next lesson is on the K kana. Ka,Ki,Ku,Ke,Ko and will be given by Hayleyzball feel free to pm me if you have any questions.
